Photowork by Stephan Keppel and Petra Noordkamp PuntWG, Marius van Bouwdijk Bastiaansestraat 15, Amsterdam Opening December 6th 2015 / 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Early December, visual artist Stephan Keppel will show the first results of his new photo project about New York in PuntWG. This project is part of his research that started at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal. This international research institute and museum of architecture has an extensive database from which Keppel has collected images of New York, which he scanned, copied and re-photographed. These images were then combined with photographs that he made himself while staying in New York and where he among others photographed for two days in a thrift store where they sell second-hand building materials. In this way he tries to uncover something of the soul of the city. Keppel will also exhibit images from his project Entre Entrée about the outskirts of Paris and he will give an insight into his way of working by showing a part of his collection of photos and books about the city. Photographer and filmmaker Petra Noordkamp who invited Stephan Keppel for this presentation, will show a small number of stills of her film Il Grande Cretto di Gibellina. The film for which she was commissioned by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, is about an impressive land art project of the Italian artist Alberto Burri. He covered the ruins of the city of Gibellina in Sicily which had been completely destroyed by an earthquake, with a large layer of white cement creating a vast labyrinth. In her film she focuses mainly on the forms, the material and the structure of this work, making these images blend beautifully with the urban landscapes of Stephan Keppel.
